Local Training
The college tutor is delighted the Core Surgical Trainees have been so excited and enthusiastic about their experience at St Peter's, and with a vibrant Surgical Local Faculty Group there is an energised group of consultants who are all keen to encourage and train the surgical consultants of tomorrow. With a structure provided the trainees have risen to the challenge and engaged in all the department has to offer.
Trainees are expected to participate in formal and informal local teaching sessions. These include Outpatient, Theatre and Ward Round as well as Trust Educational Half Days, Audit meetings and Surgical Journal Club.
There is a lot of teaching that goes on at outpatients, during ward rounds, Trust Educational Half Days and in Fracture meetings. It is important that trainees participate in these.
- Trauma and Orthopaedics - Daily Fracture Meeting at Rowley Bristow Seminar Room at 8:00am every day
- General Surgery & Urology - Junior Doctors Forum at the Post Graduate Centre - each Educational Half Day
All trainees take part in the Surgical training programme which involves bedside teaching, teaching at MDTs, seminars and journal clubs.
F1s/F2s and GPSTs must attend all the Foundation Programme/ GP Teaching for the days they are working.
- Foundation Programme teaching: Monday and Thursday 1400-1700 at the Post Graduate Education Centre
- General Practice: ST1 & ST2 Teaching Thursday 1215-1300 at the Post Graduate Education Centre
Core Teaching
The Core Surgical Programme Structure - KSS has the Three Trust Regional Teaching Programme, which is based on the ISCP curriculum. The Three Trust programme is taught at St Peter's, Royal Surrey and Frimley Park. There is also an annual trainee audit and KSS Prize Day day. Trainees are all encouraged to submit work to this.
Since the implementation of the Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Project (ISCP) the three Hospitals in Surrey have formed a collaborative Training Project. If the trainee cannot attend the Surrey teaching it is possible to attend the Kent or Sussex teaching. It is important to attend all teaching sessions, and this will be reviewed at ARCP.
Other Educational Events/ Opportunities
Ad hoc teaching activities take place around the Trust. Where possible these events are collate and advertised via the PGEC and via the Surgical Tutor's Homepage Blog (see details below). Informal combined T&O and Radiology meetings are also a feature of education here and though they take place out-of-hours they are extremely valuable learning opportunities.
Sub-Specialty Opportunities
For a DGH, we cover a huge number of really quite specialised skill sets. We are a tertiary referral centre for Limb Reconstruction and Non- Union management for example, and we have links with the University of Surrey and with the Royal Holloway.
Whatever the trainees' interests are, they are to take this with their Educational Supervisor to link in with the various disciplines, for attachments or taster sessions.
Research Opportunities
Completed audit loops are an expectation of Core and Higher training and there is a vast array of projects available to lock into.
Supervision
The trainee will be assigned an Educational Supervisor (ES) for the whole year and a Clinical Supervisor (CS) for each rotation. It is important that the trainee meets his/her ES and CS early so that specific training needs for the whole year and the surgical posting are agreed.
General Surgery
The on-take team comprises of the following over day/night shifts. All rota's are compliant with EWTD and all leave must adhere to the housekeeping rules to avoid teams being away at the same times.
Day/night Shift: General Surgery / Urology. Consultant on-take - four-day midweek handing over at 08:00 on Friday morning and three-day weekend handing over at 08:00 on Monday morning. Free from all fixed commitments during the on-call. Consultants may do reduced outpatient clinics at St Peter's Hospital.

Introducing the College Tutor
My name is Tanaya Sarkhel, Orthopaedic Surgeon and Surgical Tutor at Ashford & St Peter's Hospitals. I hope you'll find this page helpful particularly for junior doctors trying to choose and decide which organisation they hope to do their training in.
My subspecialty interests include Hand & Wrist surgery and some shoulder surgery, but I have been a member of WinS (Women in Surgery) since its inception and interview nationally for Core and Higher Surgical Training and Consultant appointment panels, which I hope allows me to make sure our candidates are the best prepared they can be to progress up the surgical ladder.
