About our Radiology Department
Ashford and St Peters radiology department consists of 18 consultant radiologists. They cover a wide range of specialties, including paediatric radiology, nuclear medicine, breast, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, CT and MRI.
The junior doctors within the department consist of:
- 2 Radiology trainees
- 2 FY1 doctors
The consultants work across 2 sites:
- Ashford Hospital, off Junction 13, M25 in Ashford, Middlesex
- St Peters Hospital, off Junction 11, M25 in Chertsey
What radiology services do we offer?
"Approximately 250,000 patient examinations are carried out over the course of a year in our department."
The department has 3 modern CT scanners (bariatric and cardiac enabled), 2 MRI scanners and 2 SPECT gamma cameras. We also have direct access to the latest fixed site PET/CT scanning facilities at Guildford.
We have 5 ultrasound suites on two sites, including 1 ultrasound interventional room. We provide a same day phone in service for GP patients.
The hospital provides specialist bariatric, vascular and orthopaedic surgery. We shave a large cardiac unit with the whole spectrum of cardiac imaging provided.
Our purpose built Interventional Suite was opened in 2009 and it enables us to offer a wide range of interventional procedures.
We have a digital mammography machine, which is located at Ashford Hospital. Three of our consultants specialise in mammography and we provide many one stop symptomatic clinics.
There are several multidisciplinary meetings every week that cover all specialties.

Dedicated registrar room | |
A dedicated room, which comes equipped with a PACS reporting station, trust personal computer and an Apple iMAC running Osirix is the base for radiology trainees at St Peters.

Local Teaching | |
Daily tutorials focusing not only on the FRCR curriculum, but also on practical emergency on call teaching.
|
Supervision | |
A clinical supervisor is allocated to each trainee when they start their attachment at ASPH. During the initial meeting your learning objectives are set which are guided by the Royal College of Radiology curriculum.

Exam Support | |
Full study leave is available for all examinations. The deanery provides anatomy and physics teaching held in Brighton in preparation for the FRCR part 1.

On Call Shifts | |
The late shifts are consultant led and ST1 trainees are not expected to be on call for the first 8 months of training. After which the commitment for registrars is 1 day a week from 5pm-8pm and 1 Saturday/Sunday a month from 9am-5pm.

"'There are excellent daily radiology tutorials held in the dedicated registrar room. The Apple iMAC holds a growing library of cases which is so useful for exam revision. Additionally, there are deanery regional training days held six times a year. The on-call shifts provide valuable learning opportunities for CT and ultrasound as well as helping to develop strong management skills.
There are abundant audits and projects to get involved with many opportunities to present throughout the year. Previous trainee research, audit and posters have been formally presented at national/international meetings as UKRC, ECR, BIR, RSNA, BMJ QI and BMUS"
