Our Specialties: Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Maternity Services
The maternity unit at St Peter's Hospital delivers approximately 4000 babies every year. The unit has a delivery suite with 2 fully equipped operating theatres, a high dependency unit, a birthing pool and a daffodil room (women with pregnancy loss, monitored and delivered here). The unit is also supported by a level three neonatal unit, a day assessment unit, antenatal clinics, scanning suite and a triage area.
There is a midwifery-led delivery unit (Abbey Birth Centre) for low-risk births, which is separate from the main delivery suite.
Specialised antenatal clinics include:
- Joint Diabetic and endocrine disorders clinic
- VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean section)
- Multiple pregnancy
- High risk pregnancy
- Fetal Medicine
- Perinatal Mental Health
- Preterm
- High BMI and thyroid disorders
As per national guidance, the unit offers combined testing (nuchal translucency scan at 11-13 weeks and biochemistry) and anomaly scans at 19-21 weeks to all women routinely. Additional growth scans and consultant-led ante-natal care are offered to women with risk factors as required. Obstetricians at St Peter's hospital work closely with their colleagues at St George's Hospital, when required for cases with complex feto-maternal problems.

There are ample opportunities to be involved in an audit. Re-auditing and closing the audit cycle is encouraged. Specialist research midwives can guide and support trainees in participating in a research project.

College Tutor
My name is Vasileios Minas, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon. I became college tutor in October 2018. I have since been heavily involved in training and supervision of obstetrics & gynaecology trainees at St. Peter's Hospital. I represent the unit in KSS Deanery meetings on a regular basis. This has been a particularly rewarding experience for me. My colleagues at St. Peter's and I do our best to ensure that you will enjoy your time with us and that your training experience will be of high quality. This is a busy department with a good mixture and variety of secondary and tertiary obstetric and gynaecological services. The consultants and staff are friendly and supportive, making this a great learning environment for all doctors in training, whether specialty, GP or Foundation trainees.
